Ericsson is launching a SIGTRAN-based SS7 product. It has already been in use on Ericsson's Open Network Gateway (ONG) and has now been adapted to the external market.

"SIGTRAN makes it possible to transport SS7 signaling over IP networks in a reliable and standardized fashion," said Jrgen Trnk, Business Development Manager at Ericsson.

SIGTRAN is a standard developed by the IETF. Two new SIGTRAN protocols- Stream Control Transport Protocol (SCTP) and MTP-L3 User Adaptation (M3UA)- have increased accessibility and reliability of SS7 signaling transport.

In the new solution, Layer 2 (MTP-L2) and Layer 3 (MTP-L3) in Ericsson Infotech's traditional SS7 stacks are replaced by SCTP and M3UA.

"We thus make it possible to use the same module for ISUP, regardless of if it concerns an IP-based or traditional network solution," explains Trnk.

ISUP is a key component for speech and for ensuring that network operators can receive payment for calls.

Customers will not need to replace switchboards to add SIGTRAN support- the same ISUP module can be used.
